Mt Fremont Lookout Trail

Mt Rainier National Park, Mt Fremont Lookout Trail

Mt Fremont Lookout Trail was a trail I wanted to hike when I first visited Washington State. But I came in late October and Sunrise Road had to close early due to weather. I returned in summer and made it a goal to hike this trail. Here are some things to know about the trail.

About Trail:

Mt Fremont Lookout Trail is in Mt Rainier National Park. The trailhead starts at Sunrise Visitor Center. The trail is about 5.7 miles long total there and back.

The trail is mostly out in the open. There is a short section where there are some trees, but it’s still very open (it’s not a forest by any means). You will hike through the meadows.

It is not a loop trail. You will hike to the lookout and then hike back the same trail.

There are a couple sections on the trail, as you get higher, where it’s all rocks. Make sure to be careful in these areas. The rocks are piled on top of each other and you’re walking on top of the piled rocks.

Because of the openness of this trail, on a hot sunny day, there is no shade. Make sure to bring enough water and stop to rest as needed.

I would also recommend using the restroom before starting the trail. There are no bathrooms at the lookout. The meadows are open so there is no place for you to “go” either.

The incline of this hike, I would say is steady and constant. There is an incline all the way through to the lookout, but it’s not super steep nor would I consider it strenuous. Just make sure to have good shoes.

This trail has a lot of foot traffic so you will run into other people. We started the hike around 7:30am. When we returned which was in the afternoon, there were a lot more people making their way to the lookout.

On a good day, you may spot mountain goats. We saw a herd of them down by the meadows.

The Views:

This trail, on a sunny day, has an amazing view of Mt Rainier. It’s absolutely stunning and breathtaking the entire way through.

On the way to the lookout, Mt Rainier will be mainly on the left. On the right, there will be mountain ranges—stunning view of just layers upon layers of blue mountains.

Recommendation:

I personally highly recommend this trail if you’re looking for something with a view that is not too long and strenuous. I understand why his trail is popular. It gives you all the things you want to see about Mt Rainier.

Reminders:

I recommend dressing up on layers. This way if it gets hot, you can take things off and if it gets cold, you can put things on.

I also think it’s always important to stay hydrated especially because you’re in high elevation and out in the sun. Bring snacks too to help boost your energy.

Remember to pack back what you bring in. And don’t feed the wild animals.

I love this lookout trail. If you’ll be visiting Mt Rainier National Park, put this trail on your list.
