I want to be more conscious about my decisions. There are a lot of information out there on how you can start or what you can do to be live a more conscious or sustainable life. Sometimes all the information can get overwhelming and even unattainable. But overtime, I realized that my life is a journey, and the smalls steps I make everyday counts. Whether you want to start being more conscious about your life or if you just want to change certain habits, here are 5 things to remember:

Every person’s journey is going to look different:

Everyone is in a different point of their life, everyone’s journey is going to start off differently. Some people want to and are able to go cold turkey—meaning they can completely stop using 1-time-use plastic or they can buy land to grow their own food. For some people, they do just one thing at a time—meaning they’re decreasing their use of plastic or they’re buying produce locally grown. What works for others may not work for you. We can all help & inspire one another but the journey you’re on is yours. Don’t compare or downgrade each other. It’s the little things we do that matters.

Someone else’s plan may not suit your lifestyle:

Someone who lives in center of New York City is going to have a very different lifestyle compare to someone who lives in a small town in the middle of Wisconsin. People who have kids are going to require different things than people who don’t have kids. Find what works best for your lifestyle. Don’t compare your lifestyle to someone else’s.

Start small, one thing at time:

This is probably the most important. Start small. Do what you can with what you have. This could be as simple as putting your plastic containers or bottles in a recycling bin instead of the trash. It could also be as simple as picking up trash you see when you’re out at the beach or the park. It’s not about everyone going zero-waste, it’s truly about everyone doing what they can.

Change at your own pace:

Like mentioned in point 2, everyone’s lifestyle is different. Go at the pace that works best for you. Don’t feel like you need to all of a sudden have a zero-waste life or a minimalistic life. Change as you grow, adapt as you see fit. Make the best changes for you and your life. If you’re a mom, your changes and your life is going to look different than a single woman living by herself. And that’s completely okay. Do what works best for you.

Every effort counts:

Regardless of how you start or where you are, every effort does count. Don’t disregard what you’re doing just because it doesn’t look like someone else’s. I can’t stress this enough. Every little thing counts. Remember that everyone doing one small thing is better than a lot of people doing nothing.

And those are 5 things to remember when you want to start living a more sustainable life. I think we can all agree that it’s important to care about our environment. I believe that everyone doing a little of something is better than no one doing nothing. When you’re feeling like a sustainable lifestyle is unattainable, remember these 5 things! It’s not about a glamorous or more righteous life, it’s about doing what you can.
